Apple Launches Device Leasing

Apple is preparing to launch a leasing program that lets customers finance iPhones, Macs, iPads, and Apple Watches through monthly payments backed by Klarna, a move timed just weeks after the company raised prices on multiple devices.

The program, called Apple Upgrade, is slated to begin July 28 in the United States and will initially be offered through Apple’s retail stores and website. Leases run 24 months for iPhones and Apple Watches and 36 months for Macs and iPads, giving customers the option to upgrade early, return the device, or pay off the balance to keep it. The initiative arrives as Apple seeks to maintain sales momentum while its hardware grows more expensive due to rising memory and storage costs.

This shift also coincides with new technical controls embedded in iOS 27 that could limit functionality on leased devices when payments fall behind, raising questions about how far Apple will go to protect recurring revenue.

New Financing Structure Replaces Older Options

Apple is discontinuing new enrollments in its existing iPhone Upgrade Program and standard financing arrangements as Apple Upgrade rolls out. The older program, powered by Citizens One, bundled AppleCare and allowed upgrades after 12 months. The new Klarna-backed service will not include AppleCare, and certain lower-cost models such as the iPhone 16, base iPad, Apple Watch SE, and MacBook Neo are excluded.

Customers will undergo a soft credit check through Klarna. At the end of the term they can return the device, keep it by paying the remaining balance, or upgrade to a newer model, though some of those actions may carry additional fees. The structure mirrors automotive leasing more closely than traditional device financing and is designed to lower the monthly outlay that buyers see.

Price Increases Prompt Easier Payment Paths

Apple raised prices on several products in recent weeks, citing shortages of memory and storage chips. The MacBook Air increased from $1,099 to $1,299, while the iPad Air rose from $599 to $749. The new leasing program does not lower those sticker prices; instead, it spreads the cost over multiple years so the initial payment appears smaller.

This approach aligns with broader consumer borrowing trends. Applications for new credit reached their highest level in nearly five years in June, according to Federal Reserve data, and many households lack sufficient cash reserves for large purchases. By converting a one-time expense into recurring payments, Apple hopes to keep newer hardware in the hands of users who might otherwise delay upgrades, thereby supporting adoption of Apple Intelligence features that require recent devices.

iOS 27 Code Adds Enforcement Mechanisms

Code discovered in the iOS 27 beta reveals a framework called App Managed Features that lets an authorized financing provider app monitor contract status. If payments lapse, the system can place the device into Restricted Mode, blocking most third-party apps while preserving a short allowlist that includes Phone, Settings, Health, and the App Store. Critical-alert apps such as Messages may remain accessible depending on provider policy.

The code also introduces a new “Partner Finance Lock” that prevents users from erasing or reselling the device until the financing issue is resolved. Unlike earlier activation locks, this mechanism is tied to the financing partner rather than Apple’s own servers. The provider, not Apple, decides when restrictions activate, giving Klarna flexibility in enforcement.

Ecosystem Lock-In and Competitive Positioning

A multi-year hardware subscription increases switching costs for customers. Once enrolled, users are more likely to remain within Apple’s services ecosystem, including App Store purchases and Apple Intelligence subscriptions, because newer devices better support those features. The program also expands Apple’s recurring-revenue base without requiring the company to assume the full financial risk of the leases, since Klarna handles the credit and collections.

Competitors offering similar financing have yet to match Apple’s combination of hardware control and software-level enforcement. The iOS 27 restrictions give Apple a technical advantage in protecting asset value if devices are returned or reclaimed, a capability that could influence how other manufacturers structure their own leasing programs.

Content Strategy Complements Hardware Push

Alongside hardware financing changes, Apple continues to invest in family-oriented content that encourages ecosystem engagement. The mindfulness series Stillwater will premiere its fifth season on August 21, 2026, with the first four seasons already available. Produced with Scholastic and Gaumont, the Peabody and Emmy-winning show teaches children breathing exercises and emotional awareness through stories featuring a wise panda. Such offerings help keep households invested in Apple TV+ while parents consider hardware upgrades.

Outlook for Consumers and the Industry

The combination of higher device prices, new leasing terms, and software-level payment enforcement signals Apple’s intent to treat hardware more like a service. Customers gain lower monthly entry points but face clearer consequences for non-payment and reduced flexibility compared with previous programs. As the July 28 launch approaches, the industry will watch whether the model boosts upgrade rates or prompts regulatory scrutiny over device restrictions. The approach could set a template for other premium hardware makers seeking predictable revenue in an era of elevated component costs.
