New Ransomware Crew Exploits AWS Encryption
A new ransomware crew, dubbed Codefinger, has been identified targeting Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3 buckets by exploiting AWS’s own server-side encryption with customer-provided keys (SSE-C). This novel attack method uses AWS’s native secure encryption infrastructure to lock up victims’ data, demanding ransom for the symmetric keys needed for decryption.
According to Halcyon’s threat hunters, Codefinger leverages publicly exposed or compromised AWS keys to execute “s3:GetObject” and “s3:PutObject” requests, encrypting data with AES-256 before asking for payment. AWS Expands Infrastructure in Mexico
